Is a Free GenAI Certificate Worth It for Freshers? What Recruiters Can Check
By Pooja Goenka · Published 2026-10-14
A free GenAI certificate is worth having if it helps your résumé get past a keyword screen, but it will not get you the job on its own. The ones worth your time are earned through a proper assessment, can be checked by a recruiter on a public page, and come with a project you can explain in the interview.
In short:
- A certificate is a filter-passer and a conversation starter. The interview is still where you get judged.
- Proctored assessments carry more weight than completion certificates, because they say you were tested.
- If a recruiter cannot check it within a minute, expect them to treat it as something you claim about yourself.
- One small project you built and can explain counts for more than three extra certificates.
I run a GenAI course that has a free certification exam, so I have an interest in this question. I will try to answer it in a way that holds whichever certificate you pick.
What a certificate does and does not do on a CV
Freshers in India usually apply through job portals and campus drives where the first pass is a filter: keywords, branch, marks, sometimes a test. A GenAI certificate puts the right words on the page. That has real value when hundreds of people apply for the same role.
After that, its job changes. In the interview, a certificate gives the interviewer something to ask about. "I see you did a RAG course. Walk me through how retrieval works and where it goes wrong." If you can answer that well, the certificate did its work. If you cannot, it now counts against you, because you claimed something you cannot back up.
That is the main risk with free certificates. Collecting them is easy, so a list of six with no depth behind any of them reads as padding. One certificate you can talk about for ten minutes is better than six you cannot.
Proctored vs completion certificates
There are roughly two kinds, and recruiters who know the difference treat them differently.
A completion certificate says you watched or read the material, and maybe passed short quizzes along the way. It shows you finished something, which is a fair signal of persistence.
A proctored or assessed certificate says you sat a timed exam under some form of supervision, or completed graded tasks, and met a pass mark. It says you were tested on the material, which is the thing an employer actually cares about.
Neither is worthless. If you have the choice, take the assessed one, and when you list it, say so ("proctored, 60 questions, 70% pass mark") so the reader does not have to guess.
Can the recruiter check it?
This is the question most freshers never ask. A certificate is only as believable as the check behind it. A PDF can be edited in a few minutes, and recruiters know that.
A good certificate has a unique code and a public page on the issuer's own website where anyone can confirm it. I wrote a separate post on how to check if a certificate is real, which is the same process from the recruiter's side. Before you spend twenty hours on a course, look at what its certificate will let a stranger verify.
Free GenAI certificates compared
These are the options freshers in India ask me about most. Every detail comes from the provider's own page, checked on 14 October 2026. Where a page did not say something, the table says so. Rules change, so read the page before you start.
| Certificate | What it costs | How it is earned | Proctored? | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hugging Face Agents course | Free, two certificate levels | Unit 1 for fundamentals; Unit 1, an assignment and a final challenge for completion | Not stated | Course page |
| Analytics Vidhya, GenAI: A Way of Life | Course described as free | Finishing the course and its assessments | Not stated | Course page |
| Infosys Springboard AI certification | Announced as free in 2023 | Course completion, per the 2023 announcement | Not confirmed | Infosys press release, June 2023 |
| Google Cloud Generative AI Leader | Not free: $99 registration fee | 90-minute exam, 50 to 60 multiple-choice questions, valid 3 years | Yes, online or onsite | Certification page |
| LogicWiz Certified GenAI Practitioner | Free | 60 multiple-choice questions, 75 minutes, 70% to pass | Yes | Exam page |
A few notes on the table. The Hugging Face course is the most rigorous free material here, and its certificates come from doing the work, though the page does not describe proctoring. For Infosys Springboard, the newest official source I could find was the 2023 launch announcement, so check the current course page for the assessment rules. Google's exam is the only paid one in the list. I included it because freshers ask about it, and because a vendor's own proctored exam is the clearest example of an assessed certificate.
Pair it with one project
A project is what turns a certificate into an interview answer. A small one is fine, as long as you built it yourself and can say what went wrong along the way.
A good fresher GenAI project is one of these:
- A question-answering tool over a set of documents you chose, such as your college syllabus or a set of public policy PDFs, with a note on the questions it gets wrong and why.
- A small agent that uses two or three tools, such as a calculator and a search function, with logs showing when it picked the wrong tool.
- An evaluation of one prompt or retrieval setting against another on twenty test questions you wrote yourself.
Put the code on GitHub with a short README that says what it does, how to run it, and one thing you would change. Interviewers often ask about that last part, and a fresher who answers it well stands out. If you want a sense of the questions that come up, I collected ten GenAI interview questions where the confident answer is wrong.
How to list it on your résumé and LinkedIn
On the résumé, give it one line with the name, the issuer, the month and year, and what the assessment was. If there is a verification link, add it as a short URL.
LogicWiz Certified GenAI Practitioner, LogicWiz, Oct 2026. Proctored, 60 questions, 70% pass mark. Verify: exams.logicwiz.ai/c/XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
On LinkedIn, use the Licenses and certifications section. Fill in the issuing organisation, the issue date, the credential ID and the credential URL, which should be the verification page, not a PDF. Keep the certificate to one line and spend your words on the project.
Where LogicWiz fits
Our GenAI course is completely free, with no card. It has 57 lessons in 12 chapters, starts from your first line of Python, and ends with you building Nova, an assistant that grows into a multi-agent system with RAG, LangGraph and MCP tools along the way. Chapters 1 to 3 open without an account and the rest need a free one. The details are in is the LogicWiz GenAI course really free.
The certification exam is free too. It is proctored, 60 questions in 75 minutes with a 70% pass mark, and the certificate has a unique code, a QR code and a public verification page that anyone can open without an account. Because you build Nova during the course, you also come out with the project this post recommends.
If you are comparing more courses before you choose, I wrote up the best free GenAI courses in 2026, including ones that suit people who already code well.
Common questions
Do companies accept free certificates?
In my experience they count as a sign of interest, and the skill still gets tested in the interview. A free certificate from a proctored exam with a public verification page gets more credit than a completion certificate, and either one counts for more when you can discuss it in depth.
Which free GenAI certificate is proctored?
Of the ones in the table above, the LogicWiz Certified GenAI Practitioner exam is free and proctored. Google's Generative AI Leader exam is proctored but costs $99. The free course pages I checked did not describe proctoring.
Should I pay for Google's Generative AI Leader exam?
Google's page says it is for anyone, with or without hands-on technical experience, and its exam areas include business strategy for generative AI. A developer fresher will probably get more from a free hands-on course and a project. If a target employer specifically asks for Google Cloud credentials, it becomes more useful.
How do I add a certificate link to LinkedIn?
Add it under Licenses and certifications and paste the issuer's verification page into the credential URL field. Avoid linking a PDF in cloud storage, since nobody can tell whether it was edited.
Does the LogicWiz GenAI certificate cost anything?
No. The course and the certification exam are both free. The exam runs on LogicWiz Exams, which has its own sign-in.
