AI interview tools to screen technical candidates (2026)

Last updated · By LogicWiz Team

Short answer: An AI interview tool screens technical candidates by asking every candidate the same role-specific questions, following up on weak answers, and scoring against a written rubric that your team can read and override. HireVue, Karat, CodeSignal, HackerRank, Mercer Mettl, Interviewer.AI, Apna and LogicWiz Interviews take different approaches, from human-led interviews to AI-led voice calls. Choose by what the first round must prove, check what is recorded and who sees it, and keep a person in charge of the decision.

Hiring teams look for an AI interview tool when first-round calls eat engineering time and every interviewer scores differently. The fix is not the AI by itself. It is a structured first round: the same questions for every candidate, a written scoring rubric, and a record you can compare. This guide explains how that works, what to look for, and what eight tools state on their own pages, which we read on 22 October 2026 and link below. LogicWiz Interviews is one of the eight and we are not neutral, so we say where it is weaker. Vendors change products often, so confirm details in a demo.

How a structured, scored first round works

  1. Define the role. Pick three to five competencies (for example coding, debugging, system design, communication) and write what a weak, acceptable and strong answer looks like for each.
  2. Ask the same questions. Every candidate for the role gets the same core questions, in the same order, in the same time.
  3. Follow up. A fixed script misses depth. A good tool, or interviewer, asks a follow-up when an answer is vague or wrong.
  4. Score against the rubric, per competency, with the evidence noted. Scores come before discussion.
  5. Compare and decide. Interviewers submit scorecards privately, then discuss. Our posts on a technical interview scorecard template and how to run a hiring debrief go deeper.

What to look for

  • Same questions for every candidate, and an audit trail showing they were asked.
  • A rubric you can read. If the score cannot be explained in a sentence per competency, you cannot defend the decision.
  • Follow-ups. Ask the vendor to show a vague answer and how the tool responds.
  • Bias and fairness evidence. Ask what has been tested, by whom, and how you can see the reasons for a score.
  • Consent and notice. Candidates should know they are speaking to an AI, what is recorded and how long it is kept. India's DPDP Act puts the duty on the employer as the one deciding how candidate data is used.
  • Recordings. Who can view them, and how do you delete them on request?
  • ATS export. Can scores and notes flow into your applicant tracking system?
  • Human override. The score should be advice, and a person should own the decision.

Eight tools, from their own pages

Checked 22 Oct 2026. "Not on the page" means we did not find it on the pages we read. We list no prices.

Tool What its pages state Not on the page we read
HireVue Asynchronous structured video interviews, a voice-based AI Interviewer, smart summaries and scores, humans keep the final decision, an AI explainability statement, integrates with many ATS Candidate consent
Karat Interviews led by its own Interview Engineers, one consistent evaluation system, an eBook on human plus AI interview rubrics How scoring works, ATS integration
CodeSignal Technical assessments, an AI Interviewer giving "structured results", live technical interviews in a shared IDE, an integrations ecosystem Proctoring details, scoring method
HackerRank An AI interviewer called Chakra, certified assessments, plagiarism detection, rubric-linked scores audited for bias, SOC 2 and ISO 27001 badges Named ATS integrations
Mercer Mettl Coding tests across roles, a live coding interview platform with whiteboard and chat, AI-based proctoring, sectional and question-wise reports ATS integration, how its AI works
Interviewer.AI Asynchronous video interviews with the same questions for every candidate, AI summaries and a breakdown of scores, side-by-side comparison, ATS connections Candidate consent for recording
Apna An AI calling agent that drafts screening questions from the job, which the employer edits; it keeps recordings of AI interviews for employers to listen to Technical depth: its pages describe screening by voice, not coding
LogicWiz Interviews See below ATS integrations beyond Greenhouse

How they differ

  • Who asks the questions. Karat uses trained human interviewers. HireVue, HackerRank, CodeSignal, Interviewer.AI and Apna use AI to ask or score. Mercer Mettl's pages centre on coding tests and live interviews.
  • Video, voice or code. Interviewer.AI and HireVue use recorded video answers. Apna uses calls. CodeSignal and HackerRank put candidates in a coding environment.
  • Fit for volume. Apna and Interviewer.AI are built for high-volume screening. Karat and live-coding tools suit fewer, more senior hires.

LogicWiz Interviews

LogicWiz Interviews has two sides. For candidates, Aria is an AI interviewer that asks questions by voice or text, follows up on answers and ends with a scored report. You can try it at interviews.logicwiz.ai and the candidate plans.

For hiring teams, the page describes structured jobs and rubrics, an interviewer panel, AI-assisted screening, and an in-platform debrief with side-by-side scorecards. Rounds can be human-led, AI-led, human with AI assist, or an asynchronous AI video, chosen per round. It lists six anti-cheat signals (tab switch, multiple faces, ID check, room scan, copy-paste limits and a rolling suspicion score) and curated questions with private grading rubrics by track, from backend to behavioural.

Where we are weaker: the hiring side has far less track record than HireVue, Karat, HackerRank or CodeSignal, and we publish no independent validation of our scoring. For applicant tracking, LogicWiz can send the scored report back to a Greenhouse application; for any other system, ask us what is available today. If you need a large library of coding challenges with full plagiarism tooling, HackerRank or CodeSignal are stronger fits.

When not to use AI screening

  • Senior hires. Judgement, trade-offs and leadership are better tested by a person.
  • Very small pipelines. If you see ten candidates a month, a good scorecard and two engineers are enough.
  • No rubric yet. An AI applying a vague rubric scales the vagueness. Write the rubric first.
  • Candidates who cannot use the format. Provide a human alternative for those without a camera, bandwidth, or with accessibility needs.
  • As the only filter. Do not auto-reject on an AI score alone; review borderline cases.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI interview tool for screening technical candidates?

It depends on the first round you need. Karat gives human-led technical interviews, HackerRank and CodeSignal give coding environments with AI interviewers, Interviewer.AI and Apna suit high-volume screening, and LogicWiz Interviews offers rubric-based rounds for teams without a hiring process. Run the same role through two tools and compare the reports.

Can AI interviews be unbiased?

No tool is guaranteed unbiased. Same questions and written rubrics reduce interviewer drift, and some vendors publish fairness testing, as HackerRank and HireVue say on their pages. Ask to see the evidence and keep a person accountable for the decision.

Do candidates have to be told they are speaking to an AI?

Tell them. State what is recorded, who sees it and how long it is kept, and check your legal obligations. Several vendor pages we read did not describe candidate consent, so raise it in the demo.

Should AI scores decide who gets rejected?

No. Treat the score as advice, read the reasons, and review borderline cases yourself. Apna's help pages say the employer keeps final discretion, and HireVue says humans keep control of final decisions.

Can these tools export to our ATS?

HireVue and Interviewer.AI state ATS integrations on their pages. For the others we found none on the pages we read, so ask in the demo and request a sample export. LogicWiz sends the scored report to Greenhouse; ask about other systems.

How long does a first-round AI interview take?

It depends on the tool and the role. HackerRank's page shows a 30-minute session, but most vendors leave it to you. Keep it short and the same for every candidate.
